Management principles basically apply to almost all businesses small or large, for profit or not for profit. Even one-man small companies still have to worry about management principles as without such a basic understanding of how companies are run, there would be no realistic chance of ultimate success. Companies need to know what they are working towards, and how best to go about it. This is where the concept of best practice comes into play.

Best management principles, according to Weber (1947), are divided into three separate categories: theoretical, practical, and motivating. The theoretical category is what managers are primarily concerned with, while the other two deal with motivation. Practical and motivational theories are also known as the four corners theory. The theory of the four corners holds that managers should strive for efficiency, balance, and complementarity.

There are several management principles that managers must understand and follow. The top corner holds that managers have an obligation to manage people rather than things. The second corner is that managers have an obligation to provide a competitive edge by improving the quality of goods or services offered to customers. The third corner is that managers have an obligation to set and keep standards. Finally, managers have an obligation to develop internal strength and to assure that key performance indicators reflect the concepts and goals of the organization.

There are many management principles that managers should follow in their efforts to achieve organizational objectives. These principles help managers create an overall organizational vision, achieve specific organizational objectives, identify and communicate the goals of the organization to employees and customers, motivate subordinates, and encourage creativity and innovation. Each of these areas is essential to the achievement of organizational objectives. Let’s take each of these areas in turn.

A sound understanding of the concepts of management is required before managers can decide how to manage. Managers should learn about the theories of management through courses, seminars, and self-help books. Many organizations conduct seminars on various management theories and present opportunities for learning. Organizations also conduct training courses for new managers every so often.

Once managers have a firm grasp on management theories they can apply these theories to their own operational practices. For example, the organizational goal should be to set the highest level of production at the lowest cost to achieve the greatest level of overall satisfaction from customers. Managers should determine what techniques will be used to accomplish this goal. One management theory says that the best managers combine techniques that minimize cost and maximum revenue. Another management theory states that the best managers practice good sales technique. It further states that it is better to have salesmen who are enthusiastic about selling a product than one who is enthusiastic only about making the sale.

The principles of management theories are further applied in organizations to help managers design and manage interpersonal relationships. The most popular management concept is the concept of corporate cultures. This theory states that employees are loyal to their employers if the employers maintain positive corporate cultures. Positive corporate cultures are created when employees are treated fairly and are not demeaned.

The theory of management also says that it is much easier to find the best managers if the company has a set of rules or regulations that prohibit managers from taking their opinions into account when making hiring decisions. The Bureaucratic Theory of Management further states that superior managers are those who possess a strong knowledge of and are fluent in all of the important skills necessary for leading a team. These include communication skills, social skills, planning skills, emotional intelligence, and cognitive skills. People who master all of these skills are considered to be superior managers. These are just some of the many management concepts and theories that are prevalent throughout society today.
