TMO

A television match official, or TMO, is a person appointed to assist the referee during a match. This role is dependent on technology as the TMO watches the match via a system called ‘Hawk-Eye’, which captures the action from a variety of camera angles. This allows the TMO to provide more detailed information about infringements, foul play and attempted tries, which helps the referee to make an accurate decision.

Some fans have criticised the use of TMO as this process interrupts gameplay. Fortunately, World Rugby introduced law amendments ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup which aim to streamline the TMO process and speed up gameplay.

Referee Cam

As the name suggests, the ‘Ref Cam’ is small camera that can be attached to the referee’s shirt or headset. This technological innovation provides several benefits, both for the referee and the viewers. Firstly, Ref Cam helps to prevent verbal and physical altercations between players and referees; secondly, the coverage from this camera puts fans at the heart of the action.

This tech innovation was introduced to rugby union in 2013 and it has given fans a greater insight into the decisions and performance of referees.

Smart Boots
