What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I ensure I get around 8.5 hours of sleep each night and wake up between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Upon waking, I recite several truths about myself from Scripture, such as acknowledging God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. I keep my phone in the kitchen, away from the bedroom, and check messages and emails during breakfast. Sometimes, I skip breakfast and start my day with a 45-minute to an hour-long run. Afterward, I spend uninterrupted time in prayer and reading the Bible in my home office. I avoid morning meetings to complete my routine without feeling rushed.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies?

I stay updated by reading headlines and interesting articles from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times almost daily. I also attend 4-5 conferences annually where alternative investments are presented. These conferences and side conversations keep me informed about domestic and global macro-level events.

Can you recall a significant challenge or failure and how you overcame it?

I started a business that seemed like a guaranteed success on paper, but I tried to manage it passively, hiring others to run it while I stayed hands-off. This approach led to seven years of financial losses. The turning point came when my last employee, a great person, left for a better opportunity after seeing my continuous financial infusions. I learned that certain businesses require active management, especially initially, and the importance of heeding wise advice and not throwing good money after bad.

What is your approach to starting a new project?

I liken starting a new project to trying on a pair of pants. I rely on my gut instincts and start down the road of a project quickly, like walking around in new pants to see if they fit. I prefer to initiate the first steps and then assess the project’s feasibility rather than dismissing ideas outright.

What is your most challenging decision in the last few months? What was the outcome? Would you do anything differently today?

Several years ago, my wife and I decided to leave our 14-year-old church, which felt like family. It was a heart-wrenching decision, but we found a new church that we love and have maintained friendships with many from the old church. In hindsight, I wish I had been more gentle during the transition and not made the departure a moral “us versus them” issue.

What was your worst job, and what did you learn from it?

Painting outside walls of warehouses during hot Missouri summers was grueling, especially knowing the walls would soon be covered in graffiti again. This job taught me the value of staying in school, which I did for a long time.

Tell us about a skill you taught yourself. How did you go about learning?

I taught myself public speaking and writing. Over the years, I’ve journaled extensively and spoken at hundreds of events, finding my voice through practice. Consistent effort and perseverance are essential, as is the case with John Williams composing music daily or Edison conducting numerous experiments before achieving success.

What people in your life or career have had the most significant impact on you? How?

A seminary friend, Gary Osmundson, has profoundly impacted me. He embodies humility and authenticity, following Jesus in a way that inspires me. Our friendship began at Biola University; his example has influenced my personal and professional life.

What do you think makes you successful?

My success stems from understanding my strengths and keeping them in check to prevent them from becoming weaknesses. I am an initiator and a doer, which drives positive energy in a company. However, this trait can lead to impatience if not appropriately managed.

What is one book you recommend everyone should read and why?

I highly recommend the Bible. It holds the keys to life and happiness but requires study and humility to understand its worth. Reading it with God’s help can provide profound insights and guidance.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in your chosen field?

I initially wanted to be a pastor or missionary, believing there is much ministry work to be done in finance. After seminary, a strengths finder test suggested I would excel as an attorney, leading me to law school. My brother Jeff invited me to join him in his financial advisory practice, allowing me to merge my communication, education, and law passions.

Can you share a defining moment that shaped your career?

A pivotal moment in my life occurred around 20 when I hit rock bottom and decided to attend church. Volunteering to teach Sunday school transformed my character and redirected my life towards seminary, marriage, and a fulfilling career where I strive to live authentically.

How would you describe your personal and professional values?

My values are rooted in Scripture, emphasizing authentic and integrity-based love for God and others. Professionally, our firm values “Momentum,” “Character,” and “Stewardship.” We are committed to continuous growth, steadfast character, and responsible stewardship of our clients’ wealth.

What advice would you give your younger self?

My younger self should be humble and meek, live quietly, work hard, and forgive daily. Spending the first part of each day with God is crucial, as He provides the answers and guidance needed for success in all areas of life.

What personal or professional achievements are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my marriage and my five children. My wife, Sarah, and I have been together since high school, and our children know and love God. Seeing my children grow in their faith and live joyfully is incredibly fulfilling.

How do you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance involves prioritizing time with God, family, and personal well-being. A structured morning routine helps me start each day with clarity and purpose, reducing stress and promoting balance.

How do you define success?

Success is fulfilling the mission God has set for me. This involves building a godly family, running an ethical and moral financial firm, giving generously, and enjoying life.

Are there any charitable organizations or community service-oriented activities that you are involved in?

My wife and I are involved in numerous charitable activities. We teach youth groups and Sunday school, host events at our home, and support single mothers and families in need. We also donate 20% of our profits to personal or corporate donor-advised funds, reflecting our commitment to serving others.
